YOUTH social engagement organisation Yo Bendigo has received $100,000 in funding through the latest round of the Federal Government’s Strong and Resilient Communities (SARC) Inclusive Communities Activity program.

The money will go towards a new youth engagement project supporting young people aged 12 to 18 in the Bendigo region to build participant confidence, independence and a sense of belonging and connection, seeking to reduce levels of unemployment at the same time.

This is expected to be achieved through the delivery of events and workshops that will provide hands-on experiences, skill-based activities, mentorship opportunities and accredited training.

The project is one of 40 that are expected to benefit up to 6000 people from communities around the country.

Over $50 million has been delivered since 2022 under SARC, with people engaging in 140 projects across Australia.

“This project will help empower young people in our community by giving them skills and support that they might not have otherwise had access to,” Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters said.

“Young people in regional communities face barriers to education and employment, which can lead to a lack of self-worth and mental ill-health (and) I’m proud to be part of a government that is working to help address these issues.”

City of Greater Bendigo mayor Cr Andrea Metcalf said YO Bendigo will work with local schools and youth service providers aiming to boost participants’ capacity and confidence in the areas of education, employment and beyond.

More information regarding SARC grants is available on the Department of Social Services website.
