State job for Bendigo veteran
BENDIGO veterans advocate Peter Swandale has been appointed to serve on the Victorian Veterans Council.
Mr Swandale is a past president of the Bendigo District RSL Sub-Branch and his role was announced by Minister for Veterans Natalie Suleyman late last month.
He served for more than 40 years with the Australian Regular Army and Reserves, gaining operational experience in Bougainville, East Timor and Iraq.
Mr Swandale joined the RSL Victoria executive team earlier this year, and has worked as chair of the Bendigo Military Museum as well as leading the RSL sub-branch.
During his presidency, he modernised the sub-branch and its culture to attract and support younger veterans.
The Victorian Veterans Council is an independent statutory body that provides advice to the government about issues impacting the veteran community.
In a statement, the Bendigo sub-branch hailed the appointment as “testament to Peter’s dedication and outstanding contributions to the veteran community.”
His operational experience had equipped him with a profound understanding of the challenges faced by veterans and their families, it said.
“Minister Suleyman’s recognition of Peter’s contributions underscores the significant impact he has made and continues to make within our community.
“We are confident that his expertise and passion will greatly benefit the Victorian Veterans Council and the broader veteran community.”
The council has 11 members, with two from RSL Victoria and Melbourne Legacy and four from the ex-service community with experience in veterans’ welfare, aged care and patriotic funds.
Three positions are allocated for people with experience in a range of fields including governance, marketing, fundraising, community engagement and military service.
The council also supports veterans’ welfare through the Anzac Day Proceeds Fund, as well as helping them transition into civilian life, find employment and look after their health and wellbeing.
Mr Swandale is overseas and could not be reached for comment.
