BENDIGO TAFE and two of the institution’s students have been named as finalist in the 2023 Victorian Training Awards.

The nominees include Pinar Teker for Vocational Student of the Year, Tia Webb for Apprentice of the Year, and Joachim Lopez-Valoa is in the running for School-based Apprentice or Trainee of the Year.

Ms Teker came to Australia from Türkiye and navigated domestic violence and sole-parenting, and although she had several degrees, she couldn’t get work without a referee.

After studying for a Certificate of School-Based Education Support and a Diploma of Community Services, Ms Teker now works in a role supporting people who have experienced child sexual abuse.

“Having studied at TAFE prepared me for what I wanted to do in my new career path and gave me the skills I can use,” she said.

“What I love the most about my role is that I am able to help or assist people when they need that additional support. Each day, I go home with a feeling of fulfillment.”

Community support worker Pinar Teker is a contender for Vocational Student of the Year.

Initially choosing teacher training, Ms Webb decided to enrol in a Certificate of Hairdressing.

“I feel very shocked and honoured, to be honest,” she said.

“By pursuing an apprenticeship in hairdressing, I was able to become qualified in hairdressing and I was also fortunate to walk away with amazing experience and skills which have assisted me in my career.”

Meanwhile, the combined Bendigo TAFE and Kangan Institute are in the running for Large Training Provider of the Year, which it won last year for both Victoria and Australia.

“We put students at the centre of everything we do,” said acting CEO Graham Fryer.

“Being a finalist in this year’s Victorian Training Awards validates our work in providing students with quality training, knowledge and confidence to change their lives, and our commitment to partnering with industry and the communities we serve to help solve critical skills shortages.”

“To win the award second time in a row would be such a boost for our staff and communities to know that what they are doing is recognised and it really matters.”

The winners will be announced at a ceremony on Friday 18 August.
