THE two Hargreaves Mall ‘lanterns’ are again available for businesses and sole traders to rent free of charge for up to six months.

The City of Greater Bendigo last week opened expressions of interest from those who could take up a tenancy of the former public toilets, which were converted into spaces for pop-up businesses several years ago.

The lanterns have sinks, a small bench space, access to power and water, and room for a fridge (to be supplied by the City).

Both have a servery window that opens on to the mall, and tenants can also make use of the immediate outside area under awnings to showcase their goods and services or host events.

City strategy and growth director Rachel Lee said now was the perfect time to take up a short-term tenancy.

“This is a great opportunity for micro-retailers, creatives, start-ups, home-based or online ventures to take the leap into a shop front without the risk of locking themselves into a long-term lease and the many costs that come with that,” Ms Lee said.

“Future tenants can try something new and still be in the position to put money back into their business.

“The next six months will bring warmer weather, the busy Christmas trading period, and the City of Greater Bendigo is about to refresh the centre of the mall with new landscaping and unveil new artwork for the screens attached to the lanterns.

“Activating the lanterns with small businesses will also complement existing businesses in the city centre and further drive foot traffic into the mall.”

Applicants need to provide their ABN details, suggested months of tenure (less than six months if desired), preferred days and operating hours, and a description of their business and the activities they plan to conduct.
