YOUNG wordsmiths of the written of spoken variety are being invited to take part in an upcoming poetry performance.

Known as the YO Poets Showcase and with the theme of A Winter Night, the first of its kind event is set for Bendigo Library’s amphitheatre on Thursday, 24 June between 5.30pm and 7pm.

All genres and styles of poetry, from haiku to iambic pentameter to slam – and everything in between or even further out there – are welcomed from people aged 12 to 25 years old.

Local writer, performer and event spokesperson Emma Burgess-Gilchrist said the showcase is all about providing young writers and creatives a forum to show off their linguistic gymnastics and creativity.

“Young people have a voice, now and in the future and this showcase is an exciting opportunity for them to feel heard by their community” she said.

“It provides the opportunity for young people to develop their skills as writers and performers and secure a place in the local spoken work scene.

“To stand before your community as a creative communicator and share your poetry is not only incredibly empowering, it’s fun.”

An effort by the City’s Yo Media Team, free registration for the showcase closes on Friday, 18 June and performance places are limited to eight acts. You can sign up at yobendigo.com.au/yopoets.

Audience entry to the YO Poets Showcase is by gold coin, with money donated to the Bendigo Winter Night Shelter.
