YOU’RE invited to the 1873 Lauriston Chapel at Langley Estate to witness one of the country’s highly regarded trumpeters perform alongside one of the most acclaimed concert organists.

Tristan Rebien, who plays trumpet for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and Thomas Heywood have joined forces for a one-off concert, a specially curated program featuring works by baroque greats Albinoni, Telemann and Bach, on Sunday, 21 August.

Born in Bendigo and having grown up in Welshman’s Reef between Maldon and Newstead, Rebien said the concert is a coming home of sorts.

“I finished my secondary education at Girton Grammer school and played in and around Bendigo for many years so it’s always good to come back,” he said.

“The central Victorian arts scene has always been fantastic but it seems to be growing all the time, there’s so many good things happening in Bendigo so it’s really exciting to be back.”

Rebien met Haywood, who co-owns Langley Estate with his wife Simone, at private school Haileybury in Melbourne, where Rebien is head of brass and Haywood head of organ.

“He’s [Haywood] just a fantastic musician and incredible to work with,” Rebien said. “I think it will be the first of quite a few shows we put together.

“To inhabit his musical world is really exciting. In terms of manual dexterity on the instrument, he’s a wild player to play with. It’s incredible, it’s electric.”

The pair play at the 1873 Lauriston Chapel, which Rebien said offers fantastic acoustics for trumpet and an intimate connection for the audience.

“We’ve put together a program that people will really enjoy and we’re going to enjoy playing it and hopefully if you come to the concert, you’ll be swept up on that,” Rebien said.
