BENDIGO residents are now paying six point two per cent more for their water and sewerage services under Coliban Water’s new fees and charges schedule.

The increase means the average owner-occupier’s bill will rise by about $1.74 a week to a total of $1562.15 a year.

The average bill for a renter will rise by about 56 cents a week to $498.18 a year. Renters only pay for usage, not water or sewer access charges.

Fees for rural customers will increase by less than inflation – most up by 2.3 per cent – and less than last year when they rose by 5.7 per cent.

The new pricing structure took effect on Monday 1 July.

Coliban Water managing director Damian Wells said the water utility worked hard to strike a balance between building sustainable, modern infrastructure for future generations while being fair to customers now.

“Many of the water and sewage assets we manage on behalf of our customers date back to the gold rush,” Mr Wells said.

“This infrastructure is ageing and is being increasingly tested by our region’s growing population and the impacts of climate change.

“Just like the other things we own – our homes, our cars – our water infrastructure requires regular investment and renewal.

“As a 100 per cent customer-funded business with every single one of our customers contributing to these projects through their water bills, it’s our responsibility to use this money prudently to maintain and upgrade vital community water and sewer assets for the next 50 years.”

The price increases will help Coliban Water pay for what Mr Wells said is its biggest-ever program of capital upgrades and asset renewals.

He said the authority was aware many in the community were feeling cost-of-living pressures, and there would be continued financial support available for customers who needed it.

“We are now providing $570,000 a year until 2028 to fund the Coliban Assist Program,” he said.

“Our customer support team is trained to provide confidential advice, support or referral to other services.

“If you are experiencing difficulty paying your water bill, are experiencing family violence or require other support, I encourage you to speak with our team.”
