SUMMER is a time for sunhats, lazy walks in the afternoon, and flopping on the grass in a park with an ice cream cone.

Bendigo has got you covered with two gelato stores in town offering a combined total of 70 flavours, almost enough for one for each day of summer.

Carys Bush, manager at Augustus Gelatery, said their gelato is made in Melbourne from Italian ingredients.

“We’ve got 36 flavours,” Ms Bush said. “Ranging from gelato to sorbet to plant based.”

Among the most popular flavours Augustus Gelatery is dulce de leche, Nutella, and caramel brownie.

“There’s this one we have called baccio, it’s like Ferrero Rocher, that’s my favourite,” Ms Bush said.

The Gelatery sits across from the Bendigo Art Gallery, making it a good place to stop before or after a visit to one of the exhibitions.

Across town near Lake Weeroona is Favourite Flavours, a long standing staple for ice cream lovers in Bendigo.

Shae Crouch who has been an ice cream scooper at the shop for three years said the 34 flavours they sell are all made onsite.

“We’ve got a few Christmas ones, we’ve got Christmas pudding and candy cane at the moment but there’s always new ones coming out,” she said.

Popular flavours at the store are chocolate, salted caramel, and Tim Tam, but Ms Crouch said she often recommends her own favourite flavours to customers, which includes snickers and mango sorbet.

“Honestly they’re all pretty popular, I think everyone’s got their own flavours that they like,” she said.

Ms Crouch said although it was a sticky business, selling ice cream was a great job.

“It’s nice seeing all the little kids get excited,” she said.

Favourite Flavours also has a cafe, making it a good place to pop in for a scoop or a coffee after a walk around the lake.
