Weaved art on show

SIX artists who come together to make art pieces out of everyday fabrics and textiles have put their creations on show in the Living Arts Space at the Bendigo Visitor Centre.

Curator, Amy Carr-Bottomley, said the exhibition titled Cloak is a celebration of the materials that are commonly used every day.

“Textiles are often taken for granted and yet they play an important role in our daily lives,” she said.

“Steeped in cultural and familial traditions, textiles offer warmth, protection, ritual, symbolism, style and comfort.”

Ms Carr-Bottomley said the artists used the word ‘cloak’ to inspire their works.

“This free exhibition displays six different artists’ individual interpretations of the word ‘cloak’,” she said.

“That explores the wonderous multifunctionality of the textile as a material and as a creative expression.”

Ilka White, Catherine O’Leary, Roz Effenberg, Pam Barnes, Amy Conly and Trina Dalton Oojges contributed to the exhibition.

The artists will also spend time live weaving a tapestry during the exhibition, which can be seen in the Visitor Centre front window.

Ms Carr-Bottomley said the demonstration was a great opportunity to learn about the craft.

“Residents and visitors will be able to see this from the street and they will be invited into the space to contribute to the weaving when an artist is present,” she said.

The Living Arts Space is located within the Bendigo Visitor Centre at Pall Mall with Cloak running until Sunday 3 September.
