GREG King first started watching Doctor Who as a child, but he now shares his favourite TV show with a group of likeminded locals.

Mr King helped establish the Bendigo Whovians Society, who marked six years of devotion to, and celebration of, the British sci-fi classic series earlier this month.

“I’ve watched it all because I started back in the 70s,” he said. “That’s when I discovered it and I’ve basically grown up with it.

“Since I discovered it as a kid it’s been my favourite TV show and I’ve been watching it ever since.

“The main idea [of the Society] was to have a spot for people locally to chat and it’s because we were able to communicate together like that, we were able then to start doing actual social activities.”

One such event was a planned meetup this month, but a COVID cap on attendee numbers meant the group was forced to postpone the occasion.

It would have been the first catch-up they had held since the beginning of the pandemic 19 months ago.

While Mr King said the delay was unfortunate, plans are already in motion to reschedule a December meetup. In the meantime, the group have remained strong and connected online.

“Being a Facebook group, of course, it’s fabulous in that sense that we have been able to keep connected and chatting and moving on with what we do as Dr Who fans,” he said.
