THE City of Greater Bendigo is undertaking flood and waterway studies in Goornong and Epsom/Huntly and is inviting residents from both communities to attend two workshops designed to help identify local emergency risks and potential responses.
The Goornong flood study is looking at how water moves through the land in the locale and the results will be used to create a series of flood maps.
Meanwhile, the Epsom/Huntly study is using existing flood maps to check where riverine flooding might potentially happen.
The latest weather data and lessons from past floods will also be used as part of the studies, both of which are designed to help protect important things like people, buildings, nature and other special places.
The workshops, which will be facilitated by independent external consultants, are taking place at Goornong Memorial Hall on Wednesday 5 November from 5.30pm to 8pm and the Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve on Thursday 6 November from 5.30pm to 8pm.
“We really want to hear about the experiences of residents living in these areas so that we understand the community’s concerns, (so that) the studies reflect what actually happens on the ground, and we can start to identify solutions together,” City climate change and environment manager Michelle Wyatt said.
“The(y) will allow residents to have their voice heard and play a role in creating a safer, more connected future in their communities.”
