State building and plumbing watchdog boss quits

The boss of the Victorian Building Authority has resigned days after it was revealed some inspections were carried out virtually.

On Thursday, the watchdog confirmed chief executive Sue Eddy had resigned effectively immediately.

Chief risk officer Todd Bentley will continue in the role until a permanent replacement is appointed.

The authority did not reveal why Ms Eddy resigned or gave any further details.

Earlier this week it was revealed some plumbing inspections were still carried out virtually in addition to physical audits.

The measure was introduced at the height of the COVID pandemic, but was still being used years later.

The watchdog was also investigated over allegations of a toxic workplace culture after a long-term employee died by suicide in 2022.

Opposition home ownership and housing affordability spokeswoman Jess Wilson called for a comprehensive and independent review into the authority to make sure it is operating effectively and protecting Victorians.

“Whether it’s… building inspections being done by iPhones or the failure to ensure compliance that builders are taking out compulsory insurance for customers, we’re seeing a VBA that is in absolute chaos,” Ms Wilson said.

Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny has sought advice about the governance and management of the VBA from the Department of Transport and Planning.
