The size of Ascot is approximately 9.8 square kilometres with the population of Ascot in 2011 being 1,342 people and by the 2016 Census the population was 1,964 showing a population growth of 46.3% in the area during that time.
Ascot is a rural residential suburb 7 kilometers north-east of Bendigo now very popular with young families and boasting one of the youngest median ages in the region.
The population has clearly surpassed the last recorded figure of close to 2,000 people and this month’s Census should provide some great new data on this community’s growth and demographic.
In 1854 the Bendigo Jockey Club was formed and chose a venue north of Bendigo for its race meetings.
It is thought that the famous English racecourse, Ascot, inspired the place name.
Epsom, the name of another English racecourse, is immediately west of Ascot, on the other side of the railway line from Bendigo to Echuca.
The racecourse is in the south-west corner of Ascot, and it is adjoined by the Bendigo Golf Club (1901) and its golf course.
The eastern side of Ascot is occupied by the Bendigo Regional Park.
CoreLogic data indicates that the predominant age group in Ascot is 0-9 years with households in Ascot being primarily couples with children and are likely to be repaying $1,400 – $1,799 per month on mortgage repayments, and in general, people in Ascot work in a professional occupation.
