Athletes chase glory at All-Schools
ATHLETICS Bendigo Region is well-represented in Victoria’s team of 227 at this weekend’s Australian All Schools field and track championships in Brisbane.
The three-day meet starts today, Friday 6 December at Queensland SAC in Nathan, Mount Gravatt.
A group of 11 athletes with links to Athletics Bendigo Region clubs will be in action across a wide range of events.
Weeroona College’s Kai Norton starred at the state finals in Lakeside, South Melbourne.
Season-bests of 54.55m at hammer and 53.97m in javelin are likely to put Norton who is a member of South Bendigo Athletics Club in medal contention in the under-16 finals.
Another hammer contender will be Hailey Stubbs from Sacred Heart College Kyneton/Bendigo Harriers in the under-17 class.
At pole vault it will be Weeroona College’s/South Bendigo’s Jordyn Lewis aiming to surpass her best of three metres in the under-14 final.
On the track, Bendigo South East’s/University’s Avery McDermid and Chelsea Tickell from South Bendigo AC are in great form.
McDermid will aim to improve on season-bests of 1.54 and 3.51 in the under-17 800m and 1500m finals.
Tickell struck gold in the under-16 1500m at the finals and has a season-best time of 4.41.
In the 2000m steeplechase action it will be Girton Grammar’s/University’s Abbey Reid and Sacred Heart Kyneton’s Sarah Fitzpatrick in the under-17 final.
The under-15 2000m steeplechase includes Charlise McQueen from Marist College Bendigo/Eaglehawk AC.
Another Sacred Heart student in action will be Tyler Fynch in the under-15 3000m.
Fynch has flown around the Bendigo and Lakeside tracks in the red and white of South Bendigo.
St Joseph’s Echuca’s Scarlett Southern will race in the under-18 400m.
The talented runner competes for Echuca-Moama in Shield League.
High jump contenders include Girton Grammar’s Kate Wilson in the under-16 class.
The jumps ace is part of Eaglehawk’s powerful squad.
