Dogs up for fight on Square’s turf

IT’S another dogfight as Golden Square meets Gisborne in this Saturday’s sixth round of senior footy in the Bendigo Bank Bendigo FNL season.

Both clubs have had great battles to decide the league’s “top dog” for many seasons.

Last year it was Gisborne which marked another premiership victory.

On Saturday the Brad Fox-coached Gisborne makes its way to Golden Square’s ground at Fur Life Oval in Wade Street.

An away game may not faze Gisborne too much as all three defeats this season have been at home.

Playing at Golden Square is not easy, especially against a team which has key forwards Joel Brett and Brayden Vaz, on-ballers Jack Geary, Ryan Hartley and Ricky Monti in form.

Premiership-winning captain Pat McKenna was back to lead Gisborne’s attack last round and is a crucial cog in a team that includes new skipper Jack Reaper, Braidon Blake and Flynn Lakey.

Another big match will be at Harry Trott Oval in Kennington where South Bendigo takes on Strathfieldsaye.

The Bloods have a three and two record to hold the fourth rung on the ladder while the heat is on Storm sitting two and three and scored just two goals at home against Eaglehawk last round.

Kyneton is at home to take on Castlemaine and with Paul Chapman-coached Tigers having won three in a row, and depending on results at Square and Kennington, they could be in the top five by Saturday night.

Kangaroo Flat’s competitiveness is shown in this season’s margins where biggest loss is 60 points.

The Nathan Johns-coached Roos sit two and three going into a big clash with the ladder-leading Eaglehawk at Kangaroo Flat’s Dower Park.

A formidable Eaglehawk team includes Billy Evans, Jarryn and Kallen Geary, and Cam McGlashan.

The unbeaten Sandhurst is back at Queen Elizabeth Oval to take on the Coby Perry-coached Maryborough.
