It’s nitro, not retro for aths round

NITRO Round will be run this Friday night as Athletics Bendigo Region clubs contest Shield League field and track action at the Flora Hill complex.

A big program begins with hammer at 5.30pm.

First of the track events is the 600metres at 6pm, which will be followed by 2000 or 5000-metre walk, 60-metre, mile, and 2 x 100-metre relay.

Various flights of high jump, long jump and discus will be contested in round six.

At the halfway mark of the season, Eaglehawk leads the premier division ladder on 56 points from Diamond Valley with 47, Essendon on 36, and Western Athletics on 36.

The Hawks and Western have used their PowerPlay in which they doubled their points for the designated round.

A strong squad representing Eaglehawk includes Alyssa and William Beaton, Daniel and Dave Chisholm, Cameron Greenwood, Jorja Morrison, Isabella Noonan and Cooper Richardson.

South Bendigo leads division two on 42 points from Keilor St Bernards on 40; Nunawading on 36 and Chilwell with 34.

Bendigo Harriers is on eight points and fighting to avoid relegation and the club’s highest-scoring athlete is Neil Shaw.

In division five, Bendigo University’s score of 46 points has kept the heat on Old Scotch on 71, Whittlesea with 54, and South Coast, 50.

Top three at season’s end earn promotion from the fifth division.

In the race for the Most Valuable Athlete award, South Bendigo’s Kai Norton has scored 6620 points to be fifth.

Key members of South’s squad include Joan Self, Carol Coad, Tyler Fynch, Trudy Haines, Rhys Hansen and Keely Trew.
