Magpies to swoop into town
SUPER Netball side the Collingwood Magpies will bring top-level sports action back to Bendigo with a pre-season game scheduled for Saturday, 17 April.
Set for Bendigo Stadium at 7pm, the Pies will take on the Giants before round one of the Super Netball season gets underway two-weeks later.
Jane Woodlands-Thompson, Collingwood’s GM of Women’s Sport, welcomed the chance for her side’s return to the region.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to play in front of our Bendigo supporters,” she said.
“With the whirlwind of a year that was 2020, we are very appreciative of the continuous support we received from our members and fans whilst we were away from home.
“We look forward to showcasing our new, exciting brand of elite netball.”
By the time the Pies run onto the main court at Bendigo Stadium it’ll be three months shy of two years since they were last in town.
City of Greater Bendigo tourism and major events manager Terry Karamaloudis said that after a challenging 12 months, it was good to see top-level teams return.
“With so many events cancelled or postponed last year, it is fantastic to be able to host this event at our state-of-the-art Bendigo Stadium,” he said.
“We look forward to our community being able to come and enjoy such high-quality and exciting elite netball right here in Bendigo.
“We’re proud to have such a diverse and high-quality program of sporting and cultural events on offer.”
Bendigo Stadium’s head of events Kate Lawrence noted the popularity of the sport in the region and said supporters would relish the chance to see elite level play.
“Greater Bendigo has a strong netball community,” she said. “We are proud to provide this community with an opportunity to experience netball at its most elite level.”
The Collingwood Magpies take on Giants Netball from 7pm on Saturday, 17 April at Bendigo Stadium.
