MEMBER for Bendigo Lisa Chesters is backing a petition to have a grandstand at Tom Flood Sports Centre named after a much-loved late Bendigo athletics coach and men’s health advocate.

The petition – initiated by runner Michael Preece on behalf of the Bendigo Athletic Club – calls for the City of Greater Bendigo to commemorate Neil Macdonald’s selfless service.

Macdonald, a long-time athletics coach and successful athlete in his own right, died earlier this year, aged 81.

He was equally well known for his community involvement, including with the Bendigo Biggest Blokes Lunch for prostate cancer.

Macdonald was diagnosed with prostate cancer 16 years ago, and his death in April came 11 weeks after he was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour.

The petition, which calls for a grandstand to be dedicated to Macdonald at his spiritual home at the Tom Flood Sports Centre, has gained nearly 600 signatures since its launch online.

Re-elected last month for a fifth term after a tough election battle, Ms Chesters fully supports the grandstand push.

Neil Macdonald.

“The name Neil Macdonald is synonymous with athletics in Bendigo,” she said. “Neil was a runner and coach and helped grow the sport at the Tom Flood Sports Centre.

“Sadly, Neil passed away earlier this year but his work raising awareness for men’s health and particularly prostate cancer has had a lasting impact on our community.

“Michael Preece is one of many who will always remember Neil’s tireless advocacy and wants to honour him through naming a stand at Tom Flood after Neil. I think it’s a great idea.

“It will continue the conversations that Neil himself started about getting yourself checked to get on top of prostate cancer. I support the Neil Macdonald Grandstand.”

Mr Preece said his was only one of thousands of lives in the Bendigo region touched by Macdonald’s wisdom, spirit and generosity.

“Over the span of five decades, Neil dedicated himself to the Tom Flood Sports Centre, coaching and encouraging countless middle and long-distance runners, including myself,” he said.

“In recognition of Neil’s immeasurable impact, we urge the authorities in charge of the Tom Flood Sports Centre to honour his legacy by naming a grandstand after him.

“This act would not only be a symbolic tribute to a man who shaped the athletic scene in Bendigo but would serve as a visible reminder of his dedication to our community.”
