Scholarship intake keeps growing
THE intake of scholarship recipients in this year’s Bendigo Sports Star of the Year awards is now at ten.
Those to receive cash and a 12-month membership of D-Club membership from the May nominees for Sports Star were AFL player Harley Reid, cricketer Jasmine Nevins, and canoeing ace Thomas Creed.
Adjudged by many footy experts as the number one pick for this year’s AFL national draft, Reid has excelled for the AFL Academy, at VFL level with Carlton, and in the Coates Talent League.
The Bendigo Pioneers captain was among the Academy’s best against Carlton and earlier in the season racked up 22 disposals and seven clearances in the win against Port Adelaide’s SANFL team in Gather Round.
Meanwhile, Jasmine Nevins has earned her first Cricket Victoria contract.
After starting her cricketing journey at Kangaroo Flat, Nevins has gone on to play for Victoria in the Women’s National Cricket League and at national under-19 championships.
An all-rounder, Jasmine will be aiming to build on her tally of five WNCL matches for the Vics this summer.
Finally, it was an outstanding medal haul by Thomas Creed at the Paddle Australia and Oceania Canoe Marathon and Stand Up Paddle Board Championships in Geelong that earned him a nod.
Thomas won the TC2 junior relay, C4 junior, and under-18 canoe marathon doubles and came home with a medal haul of eight included two silver and three bronze.
As scholarship recipients, Jasmine, Harley and Thomas are in the running for the Maxine Crouch and the Cyril Michelsen Trust Fund at next February’s Bendigo Sports Star of the Year awards presentation.
