BENDIGO Spirit has announced the return of its Community Person of the Year award.

Supported by Red Energy, which holds the naming rights to Spirit’s stadium, the award celebrates individuals who go above and beyond to make a difference in both the basketball and wider Bendigo communities.

Throughout the 2025-26 Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) season, Spirit fans and Bendigo locals are invited to nominate someone they believe embodies the spirit of community.

Whether it’s a tireless volunteer, a mentor who uplifts others, or someone who brings people together through sport or service, the award is about recognising the people who make Bendigo better.

The winner will be honoured at the Bendigo Spirit end of season award night, receiving a trophy, a signed team jersey and the recognition they truly deserve.

Bendigo Spirit general manager Dan Jackson said the award was one of the most meaningful parts of the Spirit’s season.

“Last year, Luke McAlpine set the bar high with his incredible contributions – he was the club’s game day manager last season, but he really did so much more that was outside the scope of that role, and all in his own time,” he said.

“We know there are many more unsung heroes out there and we’re thrilled to partner with Red Energy again to shine a light on those who make our club and our community stronger.”

Red Energy general manager business development David Holman shared his enthusiasm.

“Supporting local communities is at the heart of what we do at Red Energy,” he said.

“We’re proud to help celebrate the everyday champions who inspire others and make a real impact in Bendigo – on the court, and beyond.

“This initiative is a wonderful way to recognise their efforts.”

Nominations close at the end of the regular season. They can be submitted online via the Bendigo Spirit website.
