Strikers ready for exam against University
BENDIGO Strikers will be poised for a tough test against Melbourne University Lightning in next Wednesday’s play in the Victorian Netball League’s championship and 23-under matches.
The battle of Bendigo and Melbourne in the 11th of an 18-round home and away series will be played on court three at the State Netball Centre in Parkville from 7pm.
A run of four consecutive wins by the Strikers in the championship action was broken in a 66-44 loss to Hawks Netball at Bendigo’s Red Energy Arena last Sunday.
Injuries and unavailability tested the Strikers’ depth against an in-form opponent.
The Tracey Brereton-coached Bendigo battled to halt the Hawks’ slick movement from mid-court to attack where Ashlea Mawer (38 goals) and Jessica Tetley (23 goals) held sway in every quarter.
Teal Hocking led the Strikers’ attack on 27 goals as Bridgette Furphy added 13 and Chloe Langley chipped in with four.
Bendigo was back on court last Wednesday night for the round nine showdown with Casey Demons at the State Netball Centre in Parkville.
The Strikers went into that match in fourth place in the premiership race on a six-three record.
In just its second VNL season, Bendigo’s run included one-goal losses to the powerful Boroondara Express and City West Falcons.
Meanwhile, the Strikers fought on for a 56-all draw with Hawks Netball in the 23-under match played last Sunday at Red Energy Arena.
A 16th goal by Ella Kerlin in the 60th minute meant Bendigo and Hawks shared the points.
The Strikers had Jorja Clode net 40 goals in an outstanding match.
Bendigo went into the midweek match with Casey in third place with a record of seven wins, one loss and one draw.
The Strikers meet Melbourne University Lightning from 8.30pm next Wednesday.
