Turner selected among nation’s best
NETBALL young-gun Ruby Turner has added to her growing list of accolades with the Bendigo Sports Star Scholarship for September.
Turner was selected for the Australian under-19 squad to train with the best up-and-coming netballers in the country.
The camp is usually held in Canberra in December however travel restrictions have meant each state’s selections will train together in hub settings, yet 19-year-old is optimistic it’ll still be a chance to develop her skills.
“I’ll just be training with the Victorian girls selected, which will still be good because there’s a lot of talent in Victoria. It’ll still be a good training camp,” she said.
Turner plays for North East Blaze in the Victorian Netball League and the Sandhurst Dragons in the Bendigo Football Netball League.
Both seasons were cut short due to COVID-19 but Turner said the support of her coaches and teammates kept spirits high.
“It’s good when you’ve got the support systems of your team and coaches, you’ve got to be self-motivated to train at home and keep the fitness levels up,” she said.
“It makes me look forward to next year, hopefully it’s a less interrupted season.”
With main focus keeping up fitness and skills, Turner said her she can’t wait for the chance to be on the court, no matter what level.
“I’ll continue to train and wherever that leads me I’ll be happy,” she said.
“Obviously, any netballers dream would be to hit the Suncorp Super Netball but I’ll just continue to train and see where that goes.
“It’s so nice to be recognised in Bendigo. I know there’s a whole lot of amazing talent across a range of sports in our region, so it really is a privilege.”
