DUAL Commonwealth Games gold medallist Aaron Wilson is no stranger to the Bendigo Sports Star Awards.

The 2018/19 Sports Star of the Year and 2021 nominee is the monthly winner for August.

At Birmingham, Wilson became the first lawn bowler in 44 years to win consecutive men’s singles gold medals at the Commonwealth Games.

He dominated the final, beating Northern Island’s Garry Kelly 21 to 3 after establishing a 12 to 0 lead.

“It’s a pretty awesome feeling to go back-to-back,” he said.

“For me it’s all about the process, you get to a good start, and you never want to blow up. To get a great start and continue on to get it done in style was pretty special.”

Wilson said it’s a “privilege” to have his name on the Bendigo Sports Star award roll again.

“I’m a big lover of Bendigo, I spent most of my days there, it’s where I started my lawn bowls career,” he said.

“It’s a great honour to be a part of the night and see some of the great athletes in Bendigo.”

At the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Bendigo will host Wilson’s pet event, although the gold medallist is yet to confirm if he will go for three-in-a-row.

“There’s no better place to play bowls than Bendigo,” he said. “I’ll be doing my best to be selected for the Games.

“I’ve got to know a few of the Bendigo bowling clubs, it’s going to be a massive event for Bendigo and I’m pretty excited to see it there.”
