Workouts help build mental strength

WHETHER it be bicep curls, leg press or any other exercise, Bendigo-based bodybuilder James Hume says doing so is more than just about “getting physical” at Silverback Strength.
Hours after being crowned Pro Mr Oceania in Men’s Physique in the NBA Pro League Mr Oceania showdown in Sydney, Hume spoke about his journey to be among the country’s best.
“Competing has been a coping mechanism for my mental health the past few years,” Hume said.
“It’s why I endeavour to teach others to use the gym, sport or anything they are passionate about to deal with mental health.
“It’s important to throw yourself into something 100 per cent instead of falling into a downward spiral.
“Using a positive outlet for mental health will always result in a better outcome.”
Although it’s just Hume when he steps under the bright lights the support from family, friends, sponsors and others involved in his sport plays a big part.
This season he teamed up with Tim Stewart for coaching advice.

“I had never had a coach,” said the 23-year-old who first became interested in bodybuilding when a series of concussions meant he could no longer play hockey or rugby.
“Nutrition, recovery and peaking for a show are areas Tim has helped a lot,” Hume said.
A multiple Mr Australia titleholder in the natural classic physique category, Hume is planning one more show in Brisbane this season.
“I will then take some time to recover, rebuild, grow and come back aiming for national and international pro titles.
Although he will not be on stage, Hume intends to be actively involved with bodybuilding.
“There are plans to do some judging, promoting and networking with sponsors to grow my brand and be an ambassador for the sport because I absolutely love it.”
Hume has gained support from Krupt Supplements.
Success across 2024 put Hume in the running for Bendigo’s Sports Star of the Year awards.
Away from the gym and bodyuilding arena, Hume is kept busy at ANZ Bank.
He also manages The Deck in Bendigo, and work with Dirty Boys Earthworks is an ideal cardio workout.
