AN innovative way of helping people facing financial strain this Christmas is hoped to assist food relief charity Bendigo Foodshare in meeting increased demand as the festive season fast approaches.<\/p>\n

Reverse Advent Calendars, a multi-state program established in 2018 by York Street Church of Christ in Ballarat, asks donors to add a non-perishable pantry or toiletry item to a specially branded Advent box each day for 20 days.<\/p>\n

Interested Bendigonians can either collect one box or several from Belle Property at 108 Pall Mall and return it by Thursday 19 December, which will then be distributed by Foodshare.<\/p>\n

Local Reverse Advent Calendar coordinator Katherine Meerman said contributors don’t need to spend a lot.<\/p>\n

“We’re very aware that asking the community to participate could be difficult for those who are struggling,” she said.<\/p>\n

“We’re not asking for a huge financial commitment – just what you can. If you want to give back this Christmas this is a simple way to do it.<\/p>\n

“You don’t know what’s happening behind closed doors in anyone’s home and you never know when you might need that help yourself.<\/p>\n

“This is a way to help someone or a family, lighten their load, and take some stress off them. It’s a small way to make a big difference.”<\/p>\n

Bendigo Foodshare CEO Michelle Murphy believes the program reflects what seems to be a growing desire for people to do something less commercial in this lead-up to Christmas.<\/p>\n

“We’re seeing more corporate groups wanting to volunteer instead of having a party,” she said.<\/p>\n

“I feel like this Calendar is part of that trend, where people want to step back from the commercialism of Christmas and help others.”<\/p>\n

Ms Murphy said the Calendar is “a practical way for people to make a difference.”<\/p>\n

“Even if you can only contribute five or ten items, it will still be very much appreciated.”<\/p>\n

Bendigo Foodshare will be running a series of pop-up Christmas pantries in partnership with Rotary to distribute the boxes.<\/p>\n
