{"id":101371,"date":"2025-01-03T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-02T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=101371"},"modified":"2024-12-19T18:01:22","modified_gmt":"2024-12-19T07:01:22","slug":"storer-raises-bar-in-titles-lead-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/sport\/storer-raises-bar-in-titles-lead-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Storer raises bar in titles lead-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SINCE he took up weightlifting a decade ago, Bendigo athlete Sam Storer has racked up hundreds of hours developing his skills and helping others pursue their goals.<\/p>\n<p>Storer&#8217;s work will be rewarded when he competes at the Victorian Country Championships in Geelong on February 1.<\/p>\n<p>He will be joined by Growl Weightlifting clubmates Justin Hargreaves, 79kg, and Alex Greening, 99kg, who will compete in the 40-44 years class.<\/p>\n<p>From a backyard shed the Growl team works on competition lifts of clean and jerk, and snatch.<\/p>\n<p>Storer usually competes in 81kg class, but a change to divisions means he will move to 79kg this year.<\/p>\n<p>Flex technology by Gym Aware plays a big part in training.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2025\/01\/storer4_85566.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"465\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Attaching the flex to the bar.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Flex measures maximum intent from rep to rep,&#8221; Storer said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Weightlifting movements such as power clean, snatch pulls can help rate of force development and measures how quickly you can take the weight from from dead stop to peak force.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is real-time feedback on average velocity, peak power, and the speed of the bar,&#8221; Storer said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The lifts we do really test leg and core strength.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Weightlifting can help increase power and speed, especially for sprinting and field events.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Like many sports a personal best, a season best, or both is a great way to measure success.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Storer said weightlifting had taught him about pain tolerance and pushing beyond his limit when he thought he could not.<\/p>\n<p>Two key coaches in his weightlifting journey have been Kim Stevens at Crossfit Dauntless and the legendary Paul Coffa.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They taught me a lot about aiming for personal bests, higher reps, and never giving up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Storer is one of more than 540 athletes that Coffa has coached.<\/p>\n<p>Coffa was the first coach to be inducted to the International Weightlifting Federation Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2025\/01\/storer1_85597.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"439\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sam Storer completes another rep in training at Growl Weightlifting. TOP: Attaching the flex to the bar.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Coffa-coached Dean Lukin, a tuna fisherman from Port Lincoln achieved a 240kg lift in the clean and jerk to strike gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, Storer has taken to field and track for Eaglehawk in Athletics Victoria Shield League and Victoria Country championships.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Run, jump and throw are all about testing speed and strength.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the Australia day weekend the Eaglehawk Athletics Club will be on home turf at Lar Birpa in Flora Hill as Bendigo hosts the Victoria Country field and track titles.<\/p>\n<p>Storer will give his all in various discipines for the mighty Borough.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SINCE he took up weightlifting a decade ago, Bendigo athlete Sam Storer has racked up hundreds of hours developing his skills and helping others pursue their goals.
