THE State Government has released a report detailing the increased popularity of women’s sport between during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.<\/p>\n
The Conversation of Sport report examined more than 4000 sports news stories published throughout the tournament between July and August 2023.<\/p>\n
During this time, almost one third of Victorian sports stories were about women’s sport and one in five focused on women’s football.<\/p>\n
Women’s sports coverage more than doubled compared to the year preceding the tournament.<\/p>\n
“The more women role models young women see, the more opportunity we create for them,” said Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence.<\/p>\n
“We want young women to know that a career in sport is a genuine option for them \u2013 from a professional player, a role at the club, in sports media, or a board room position.”<\/p>\n
Despite the increase in coverage of women’s sport, men were 18 times more likely to be asked to comment on women’s sport compared to women being asked to comment on men’s sport, excluding athletes.<\/p>\n
Football Australia general manager of women’s football Carlee Millikin said it is important to increase the visibility of women’s sport.<\/p>\n
“The ability for women and girls to see themselves in the Matildas and connect with their stories has been pivotal, not just for female participation, but also in shaping broader societal perceptions,” she said.<\/p>\n
“This visibility empowers the next generation of players, coaches, referees, administrators and fans, inspiring them to dream big.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
