A FORMER motel in Golden Square has been converted into thirty-five new social housing properties.<\/p>\n
The development is part of a $16.6 million State Government partnership with Wintringham Housing, a not-for-profit association that provides accommodation and care to people over the age of 50.<\/p>\n
The site has been designed with residents’ liveability needs in mind, with each unit featuring an outdoor space and wheelchair accessibility.<\/p>\n
In close proximity to amenities such as public transport, shops, allied health services and parks, the development is expected to achieve a Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) rating of seven stars.<\/p>\n
So far, more than $155 million has been invested in Bendigo through the Government’s Big Housing Build and other social housing programs to construct more than 370 social and affordable homes.<\/p>\n
Across regional Victoria, the Big Housing Build and Regional Housing Fund have seen more than 1800 new homes already completed. A further 1680 are underway, with thousands more to come.<\/p>\n
Minister for Housing Harriet Shing said more homes mean more opportunity, particularly for people over 50 years of age who can be vulnerable to homelessness and poverty.<\/p>\n
“This development in Bendigo will give residents access to secure, modern, and energy efficient homes that are close to transport and services,” she said.<\/p>\n
Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards said it’s all about providing Victorians with comfortable and energy-efficient homes.<\/p>\n
“These single units are a great example of what is possible for regional Victorians in need,” she said.<\/p>\n
