{"id":102594,"date":"2025-02-24T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-23T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=102594"},"modified":"2025-02-19T23:57:19","modified_gmt":"2025-02-19T12:57:19","slug":"dahlia-arts-fiesta-coincides-with-frida-kahlo-opening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/living\/dahlia-arts-fiesta-coincides-with-frida-kahlo-opening\/","title":{"rendered":"Dahlia &amp; Arts &#8216;Fiesta&#8217; coincides with Frida Kahlo opening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE close-knit Eaglehawk community is gearing up for a huge few days of festivities across the weekend of 14 to 16 March as it celebrates the 52nd Dahlia and Arts Festival.<\/p>\n<p>The first festival was held in March 1972, with a plaque commemorating its official launch by Major General Sir Rohan Delacombe still in place outside the former Eaglehawk Town Hall.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s theme \u2013 Fiesta \u2013 coincides with the opening of the Frida Kahlo: In her own image exhibition at Bendigo Art Gallery, with the dahlia the national flower of the renowned artist&#8217;s home country, Mexico, and often a detail that appeared in her work.<\/p>\n<p>A traditional feature of the weekend is the Eaglebald Art Award, which this year includes the inaugural Recycled Sculpture Award.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2025\/02\/DA4_99314.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"521\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There&#8217;s no gala parade without the annual appearance of the Eaglehawk Citizens Brass Band.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Prizes will also be given for the portrait, open\/fiesta-themed, year 7 to 12, and preschool to grade 6 categories.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday&#8217;s events include the Festival of Friendship in Canterbury Gardens from 10am to midday, with food trucks, an art and craft market plus children&#8217;s rides.<\/p>\n<p>A gala parade along High Street will follow, which Eaglehawk Festivals Inc secretary Shae Hellstedt said &#8220;is always a highlight&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>She said several school groups will appear on floats, and Mexican dancers, an inflatable Day of the Dead and the Chinese association with its dragon team will also participate.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2025\/02\/DA2_99387.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"508\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Colourful coterie: The gala parade along High Street is always a highlight, according to Eaglehawk Festivals secretary Shae Hellstedt.
