{"id":102937,"date":"2025-03-10T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-09T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=102937"},"modified":"2025-03-05T22:59:12","modified_gmt":"2025-03-05T11:59:12","slug":"author-talk-to-focus-on-timor-leste-struggles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/living\/author-talk-to-focus-on-timor-leste-struggles\/","title":{"rendered":"Author talk to focus on Timor-Leste struggles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A LOCAL group set up almost two decades ago to provide various types of support to a small town in Timor-Leste will hold an author talk on Friday 14 March to raise awareness for its cause.<\/p>\n<p>The talk will feature Gabrille Samson and her memoir, Dancers on the Sea, Stories from Atauro Island, which covers Ms Samson&#8217;s time living and working in the country during its fight for independence, and will be hosted by historian and Bendigo Maubisse Friendship Committee (BMFC) member Natasha Joyce.<\/p>\n<p>The BMFC is a volunteer-run group that maintains a long-term partnership between Bendigo and Maubisse, a mountain town which has a population of just over 6000.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_102951\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-102951\" style=\"width: 709px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-102951\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2025\/03\/MB22_67656_tn.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"709\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2025\/03\/MB22_67656_tn.jpg 709w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2025\/03\/MB22_67656_tn-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-102951\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Committee President Rod Flavell and Treasurer Deborah Blake with nursing staff at the Maubisse Referral Hospital in 2024.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We focus on education, health, arts and culture, economic development, and infrastructure based on what the community tells us are their needs,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over the years, we&#8217;ve helped provide scholarships for hundreds of students, medical and dental support for the local hospital, sewing and arts programs for residents, and we&#8217;ve shipped over 40 containers of essential supplies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ms Joyce said the talk is an opportunity to learn more about Timor-Leste and the committee&#8217;s friendship with Maubisse.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;(It) will take you inside the experience of living in Timor-Leste during a time of great political and social change,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_102954\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-102954\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-102954\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2025\/03\/MB3_67646_tn.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-102954\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Visit to Maubisse in 2024 with Maubisse residents and BMFC team members Mark Fiess, Jen Alden, Tony Plant and Jennifer Feiss.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you&#8217;ve ever been curious about what life is like (there), how communities rebuild after conflict, or how we in Bendigo can make a real impact, this is the perfect event to come along to.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Plus, it&#8217;s a great way to meet like-minded people who are passionate about international friendships and community-driven change.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The event takes place on Friday 14 March from 5.30pm at the Bendigo Library.
