DEPUTY Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles has endorsed Bendigo’s defence manufacturing industry on a visit to Thales Australia’s Protected Vehicle Centre of Excellence.<\/p>\n
During its current term, the Federal Government has allocated more than $300 million in contracts for new locally manufactured Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicles, delivering over 130 units to the Australian Army.<\/p>\n
“The Albanese Government has signed contracts for more Bushmasters to be manufactured here in Bendigo which is keeping high-tech, well-paid jobs here in the region,” Mr Marles said.<\/p>\n
“Bushmasters, as we know, have become an iconic Australian brand as they have been purchased all around the world, (helping to) protect troops, including the lives of Ukrainian soldiers.<\/p>\n
“The Albanese Government is committed to building a strong defence force and we know that starts right here in Bendigo.”<\/p>\n
Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters said before the last election, Thales Bendigo was at risk of closure, potentially making its entire workforce redundant.<\/p>\n
“Our Government’s investment in more Bushmaster contracts has saved the site and ensured long-term sustainability of vital defence industry jobs,” she said.<\/p>\n
“Bendigo has a proud defence manufacturing history (and) I will continue to fight for local jobs at Thales Bendigo and a future made in Australia.”<\/p>\n
Mr Marles’s visit comes off the back of the recent establishment of the Australian Defence Strategic Sales Office, which will act to promote and facilitate the sale of select Australian defence capabilities \u2013 including the Bushmaster and Hawkei Protected Mobility Vehicles \u2013 to priority international partners.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
