THE redevelopment of the junior oval at the Strauch Recreation Reserve in Huntly is nearing completion after $460,000 in funding support from the Federal Government \u2013 a commitment it made before the 2022 election.<\/p>\n
The upgrade includes the installation of a new irrigation system and resurfacing works, partial fencing and the re-laying of the synthetic cricket pitch to bring the facility up to standard.<\/p>\n
The revamped playing field will be ready for use \u2013 dependent on grass establishment throughout winter \u2013 at the start of the 2025-2026 junior cricket season. City of Greater Bendigo mayor Cr Andrea Metcalf said the overhaul will increase opportunities for the community and local sporting clubs to participate in organised sport and support the growth of female and junior teams.<\/p>\n
“Approximately 370 players use Strauch Reserve and a redeveloped junior oval provides more opportunity for the younger members of our community to connect and socialise through sport,” she said.<\/p>\n
Huntly North Cricket Club secretary Jenni Griffin said her club was thrilled that the redevelopment is nearing completion.<\/p>\n
“(It) means we will finally have a home ground we can call our own, enhancing the great pride our local club possesses, uniting our junior and senior clubs and providing a clear pathway from junior to senior cricket,” she said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Huntly Football Netball Club secretary Jason Bawden said training nights will become a lot safer as the younger grades can train away from the bigger kids and allow all age groups to do more oval drills.<\/p>\n
“It’s a great asset for the community as well as it gives Huntly residents a space to exercise when the main oval is being used for training and matches,” he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
