{"id":105232,"date":"2025-06-14T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-13T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=105232"},"modified":"2025-06-12T11:32:15","modified_gmt":"2025-06-12T01:32:15","slug":"sporting-clubs-invited-to-refugee-journey-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/living\/sporting-clubs-invited-to-refugee-journey-talk\/","title":{"rendered":"Sporting clubs invited to refugee journey talk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>REPRESENTATIVES from sporting clubs across the Greater Bendigo region are encouraged to attend a free Understanding Refugee Journey Session, presented by the Bendigo Community Health Services (BCHS) Cultural Diversity Team and not-for-profit regional sports advocacy organisation Sports Focus.<\/p>\n<p>Taking place this coming Monday 16 June at the Shadforth Park Pavilion in Fenton Street, North Bendigo, the session has been developed and will be delivered by individuals with experience, focusing on the journeys of people from the Karen and Afghan (Hazara) communities.<\/p>\n<p>These are some of the most significant and growing refugee populations in the Bendigo region, many members of which face considerable barriers to participation in community sport.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees will be given the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the refugee experience, both before and after resettlement to Australia, and learn about the cultural values, traditions and challenges faced by local Karen and Afghan community members.<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;ll also be guided on how to develop strategies to create a more welcoming, culturally safe and inclusive environment for players, families, and volunteers from refugee backgrounds, as well as build confidence in engaging respectfully with them.<\/p>\n<p>Sports Focus community development and partnerships lead Laura Bradley said as Greater Bendigo becomes more culturally diverse, it&#8217;s important that sporting clubs understand the journey of refugees in order to be able to better engage and support them to participate in their club.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;(We&#8217;ve) held similar sessions with a number of clubs in Bendigo, and there have been some really great opportunities and outcomes as a result,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re inviting not only committee members, but all volunteers, coaches, players, parents etc&#8230; to attend this session, as the more people who can hear this information the better.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;(We&#8217;re) very fortunate to be partnering with BCHS and have people like Zahir Azimi (BCHS refugee project worker), who are willing to share their story and journey.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hearing from people with lived experience is (really) powerful.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Understanding Refugee Journey Session takes place this Monday from 6pm to 7.30pm at the Shadforth Park Pavilion, Fenton Street, North Bendigo.<\/p>\n<p>Register at <a href=\"http:\/\/trybooking.com\/events\/landing\/1408973\">Trybooking<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>REPRESENTATIVES from sporting clubs across the Greater Bendigo region are encouraged to attend a free Understanding Refugee Journey Session, presented by the Bendigo Community Health Services (BCHS) Cultural Diversity Team and not-for-profit regional sports advocacy organisation Sports Focus.
