THIS week we chat with Julia Day in the fifth and last installment of our local actor mini series.<\/p>\n
Day said she\u2019s inspired by films with rich stories and multilayered, deeply human characters – especially when there\u2019s a sense of humor woven in.<\/p>\n
What motivated you to pursue acting?<\/strong><\/p>\n At first, it was simply fun – in High School I loved the thrill of stepping into someone else\u2019s shoes.<\/p>\n As I delved deeper, through study I became fascinated by the storytelling aspect.<\/p>\n Escaping into a character with their own world and history feels like a discovery expedition; you never know what you\u2019ll uncover.<\/p>\n I\u2019m always surprised by what I find, and that sense of exploration keeps me coming back.<\/p>\n How would you describe your acting style?<\/strong><\/p>\n My approach really depends on the piece I\u2019m working on.<\/p>\n For example certain methods work better for sketch comedy, while others suit scripted drama.<\/p>\n I don\u2019t stick to one specific style or technique; instead, I draw from a variety of methods I\u2019ve studied, as well as from other actors and directors I\u2019ve worked with.<\/p>\n If I had to define my style, I\u2019d say it\u2019s a blend of Stanislavsky\u2019s method and Meisner\u2019s focus on impulse and authenticity.<\/p>\n Which other actors inspire you?<\/strong><\/p>\n Like many actors, I deeply admire Cate Blanchett – not just for her incredible range, but also for her support of the arts.<\/p>\n Recently, I\u2019ve become obsessed with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, so Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein are big inspirations.<\/p>\n I\u2019m drawn to actors who can span multiple genres within a single story and truly captivate an audience – that\u2019s what I aspire to.<\/p>\n Are there any movies that inspire you?<\/strong><\/p>\n I\u2019m inspired by films with rich stories and multilayered, deeply human characters – especially when there\u2019s a sense of humor woven in.<\/p>\n Those are the movies that stay with me and fuel my own creativity.<\/p>\n A recent example that really resonated with me is American Fiction (2023); it\u2019s a sharp, witty film that explores identity and the complexities of storytelling in such a clever and thought-provoking way.<\/p>\n What are some highlights or fond memories you have from your time as an actor so far?<\/strong><\/p>\n The highlight of any performance, for me, is when everything comes together – the collaboration, the energy, the story – and you take the audience on a journey as one collective storyteller.<\/p>\n I especially love working with other actors who want to really dissect a character and get to the heart of what makes them tick in any given moment.<\/p>\n
