SINCE it became part of Bendigo’s Sports Star of the Year almost a decade ago, the scholarship program has helped more than 90 of the region’s athletes across many pursuits.<\/p>\n

As it celebrates its 60th year, Sports Star not only recognises outstanding feats at international and national level but also provides support for the next generation.<\/p>\n

Key players in the scholarship program are Donna and Justin Michielsen at D-Club 247 Fitness in Bendigo’s Bath Lane.<\/p>\n

“We are proud to support Sports Star and help athletes and their families manage the ongoing costs of competing at an elite level,” Justin Michielsen said.<\/p>\n

“In the past 15 months we have expanded the award beyond just access to D-Club 247.<\/p>\n

“We have partnered with Healthy Mates Bendigo to offer recovery services and expert guidance from accredited exercise physiologist Lachlan Wright.<\/p>\n

“It’s fantastic to see young athletes training in the gym, building strength and power, and sharing their stories with us.<\/p>\n

“Their drive and commitment is inspiring. We are honoured to play a small role in supporting their journey,” Michielsen said.<\/p>\n

Each scholarship recipient goes into the running for the Cyril Michelsen and Maxine Crouch trust fund awards to be announced at the gala presentation night in February at the All Seasons International.<\/p>\n

Sports Star of the Year committee chairman Sam Daykin said the financial support and services provided were a huge plus for all scholarship recipients.<\/p>\n

“The valuable role all sponsors play in this is amazing. Their sponsorship money goes directly to the athletes,” Daykin said.<\/p>\n

“Bendigo has produced so many great athletes. The goal to recognise and assist the region’s rising stars through a scholarship is really important.”<\/p>\n

Past recipients include Dyson Daniels, Alessia McCaig and Jenna Strauch.<\/p>\n

Daykin hailed the significant contribution of major partners \u2013 Bendigo Bank, Bendigo Health, McKern Foundation, and Fosterville Gold \u2013 to Sports Star of the Year.<\/p>\n

This year’s scholarship intake is Harriet Caldwell, wheelchair basketball; Roy Davis, clay target shooting; Emily Davis-Tope, ice hocking; Jordyn Lewis, athletics; Marcus Murphy, baseball; Maya Murphy, kayaking; and Tobias Sexton, canoeing\/kayaking.<\/p>\n
