CENTRAL Bendigo is set to be a safer area for everyone with work on new pedestrian-operated traffic lights underway.<\/p>\n
The works have been funded by the Federal and State governments.<\/p>\n
“This funding supports the fast roll out of lifesaving road safety treatments and greater protection for pedestrians in central Bendigo,” said Federal assistant Minister for Regional Development Anthony Chisholm.<\/p>\n
Lights will be installed on Chapel Street, near the Hargreaves Street intersection and opposite the Bendigo fire station, aiming to make it easier to cross the busy four-lane street.<\/p>\n
Raised safety platforms will also be installed on Chapel Street at the crossing to slow down vehicles.<\/p>\n
The lights will be able to be operated by Fire Rescue Victoria to enable efficient travel through the intersection in emergency situations.<\/p>\n
New traffic lights will also be installed on McCrae Street at the Mundy Street corner later this year.<\/p>\n
The lights are part of the City of Greater Bendigo’s planned Strategic Cycling Corridor aiming to create a new protected shared user path along Mundy Street from Back Creek to McCrae Street in the Bendigo city centre.<\/p>\n
During construction there will be changed traffic conditions including lane closures and speed limits reduced to 40 kilometres per hour.<\/p>\n
Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said the instillation of lights could save lives.<\/p>\n
“This important project is part of the Australian and Victorian government’s Road Safety Program which is designed to reduce road trauma and save lives,” she said.<\/p>\n
Local Federal and State government members welcomed the initiative.<\/p>\n
“As a local mum in Bendigo, I understand the importance of pedestrian safety for our families and the community, and these new traffic lights will ensure greater safety when crossing roads in the busiest parts of Bendigo,” said Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters.<\/p>\n
State Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards said the new signals will increase safety for pedestrians crossing Chapel Street.<\/p>\n
