{"id":106735,"date":"2025-08-05T10:27:44","date_gmt":"2025-08-05T00:27:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=106735"},"modified":"2025-08-05T10:29:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T00:29:15","slug":"former-mayors-legacy-remembered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/former-mayors-legacy-remembered\/","title":{"rendered":"Former mayor\u2019s legacy remembered"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"44\" data-end=\"117\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">FORMER City of Greater Bendigo mayor and councillor Peter Cox has passed away aged\u00a076.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"119\" data-end=\"156\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">He died peacefully at Bendigo Hospice on Thursday\u00a031\u00a0July following a short cancer journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"158\" data-end=\"195\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">Mr Cox served as a councillor from\u00a02008 to\u00a02016, including as mayor from\u00a02014 to\u00a02015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"197\" data-end=\"234\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">He was committed to social justice, environmental sustainability, and working with the community at a grassroots level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"236\" data-end=\"273\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">In\u00a02022, Mr Cox received a <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/from-road-safety-to-local-politics-australia-day-honours\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Medal of the Order of Australia<\/a> and he was an advocate across several causes such as road safety, heritage preservation, employment and waste reduction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"275\" data-end=\"312\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">He was instrumental in the redevelopment of Eaglehawk Enterprise Park and Recycle Shop, and in his role as president of the Bendigo branch of the National Trust, he championed the protection of the <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/future-of-old-courts-still-unknown\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">region\u2019s history<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"314\" data-end=\"351\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">Mayor Cr Andrea Metcalf acknowledged Mr Cox\u2019s legacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"353\" data-end=\"390\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">\u201cPeter was a visionary leader and a passionate advocate for Bendigo,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"392\" data-end=\"429\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">\u201cHis contributions have left a lasting impact on our city and its people.
