BENDIGO Health spiritual care practitioner Rohan Souter has been recognised for his work providing holistic support to patients at the Spiritual Care Australia National Conference.<\/p>\n
Named Outstanding Spiritual Care Practitioner for 2025, the former primary school teacher has become well known for his guitar and singing skills, which have become a unique asset in different contexts across the hospital.<\/p>\n
Mr Souter said his transition to the health sector came about because he “wanted to give more.”<\/p>\n
“I worked in different educational settings and I was always getting (students) through the academic hoops, but it was the personal, interpersonal growth and wellbeing that I was really concerned about,” he said.<\/p>\n
“My first placement was in mental health and that was just like home for me.<\/p>\n
“One of the many things that attracts me to this sort of role is person-centred care, because it’s about hearing a person’s narrative, in their own way and at their own pace, and being present with that and honouring that on an emotional and spiritual level.”<\/p>\n
He said his long-standing passion for playing guitar and singing is a great way to create a peaceful vibe.<\/p>\n
“Patients find connection with each other, with songs and the life narratives and experiences that can accompany the song.”<\/p>\n
Bendigo Health manager spiritual care Karen Lunney said what Mr Souter brings to the role exceeds what’s expected.<\/p>\n
“He brings a variety of skills to the table, leading reflection groups from a place of his own vulnerability and strength,” she said.<\/p>\n
“His musical skills enable him to create an opening for conversation and connection with patients and residents, who would otherwise not choose to engage with spiritual care.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
