ST John of God Bendigo Hospital’s da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System has reached a significant milestone by completing its fiftieth procedure since urological surgeon Associate Professor Janelle Brennan first took up its controls in March.<\/p>\n
Since installation, the da Vinci Xi has been instrumental across a range of surgeries – including prostate, thoracic and gynaecological procedures, operating on both private and public patients across Central Victoria and beyond.<\/p>\n
The 50th case was performed by gynaecological surgeon Dr Thomas Carins, who said he was “thrilled to be part of the robotics program at St John of God Bendigo and proud to offer patients the benefits of this cutting-edge technology in our regional setting.”<\/p>\n
The hospital’s CEO Michael Hogan said the milestone is a game-changer for the region.<\/p>\n
“This technology enables precision surgery with smaller incisions, fewer complications and faster recovery times – ensuring our community receives world-class care closer to home,” he said.<\/p>\n
“Robotic surgery significantly aids our commitment to outstanding clinical outcomes and helps reduce the healthcare disadvantage faced by regional patients.”<\/p>\n
The da Vinci Xi arrived in Bendigo thanks to a $2.85 million fundraising initiative led by the Hospital’s Director of Marketing and Business Development Anna Hill, supported by major donors including Agnico Eagle Fosterville Gold Mine, the Hazeldene family, community organisations, companies and individuals.<\/p>\n
There are now more than 9900 da Vinci systems around the world, operating in 72 countries.<\/p>\n
