THE Bendigo-based North Central Catchment Management Authority (CMA) has received $1.8 million in Federal Government funds for its Climate Positive Farming Initiative.<\/p>\n
North Central CMA oversees environmental water flows to rivers, wetlands, swamps and lakes in the region including the Campaspe and Loddon river catchments.<\/p>\n
The project involves partnering with the agricultural sector to encourage the adoption of more sustainable farming practices by providing information on carbon and climate incentives, promoting best practices in regenerative agriculture and focusing on innovation and soil health.<\/p>\n
The funding is part of more than $76 million being allocated via the Natural Heritage Trust’s Climate-Smart Agriculture Program to 54 projects across the country to assist farmers in adopting climate-smart, sustainable agriculture practices.<\/p>\n
North Central CMA chief executive officer Brad Drust said the organisation’s project puts practical solutions “directly in the paddock,” with on-ground trials plus the latest information and advice from experts to help improve soil health and reduce on-farm emissions.<\/p>\n
“Additionally, we will partner with First Nations People to develop unique climate adaptation plans and potential on-ground trials that integrate Traditional Ecological Knowledge,” he said.<\/p>\n
Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters said she’d heard from farmers across her electorate who are feeling the full effect of recent drought conditions, and this is a significant investment that will help them adopt climate-smart farming practices, delivering better outcomes for rural communities and the environment.<\/p>\n
