FORMER Bendigonian and debut children’s author Sarah Watts returned to town this week to present talks at local primary schools about her new book Marvellous Miles.Marvellous Miles was inspired by her own son’s epilepsy diagnosis as an infant and her family’s adjustment to a “new normal.”<\/p>\n
The touching story follows the adventures of an endearingly brave lion who wonders why his body moves in ways he isn’t expecting.<\/p>\n
Through his journey, the narrative normalises many of the realities of living with epilepsy such as seizures, medicine routines, electroencephalograms and trips to the doctor.<\/p>\n
“When children see themselves reflected in the stories that they read, we know that they thrive,” Watts said.<\/p>\n
“It normalises their experience, sparks their imagination and invites them to ask questions about the themes within the book.<\/p>\n
“It also provides a springboard for conversation about the brain and how we’re all unique – and that is something to be celebrated.<\/p>\n
“For other children, parents and carers more broadly, reading stories like Marvellous Miles (also) promotes deeper understanding.<\/p>\n
“It’s a real privilege to return to my hometown and share Marvellous Miles with the community that shaped me.”<\/p>\n
Thanks to a Rotary Foundation grant, over 100 copies of the book will be distributed to primary schools, early learning and child care centres across the region.<\/p>\n

“Supporting projects like this aligns perfectly with Rotary’s commitment to literacy and health awareness.<\/p>\n

Marvellous Miles has been shortlisted for the 2025 ACT Literary Awards in the Young Readers category and has gained attention on ABC Radio Canberra and within the ACT Legislative Assembly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
