WORK has started to construct a $3.74 million protected shared user path along Mundy Street from Back Creek to McCrae Street, with the project being backed by the State Government’s Department of Transport and Planning (DTP).<\/p>\n

The new path will allow pedestrians, cyclists and others to travel off-road between the city centre and the popular Back Creek Trail, and will be entirely installed on the same side of the street as the Bendigo Law Courts and the Salvation Army’s headquarters cornering Bramble Street.<\/p>\n

As City of Greater Bendigo presentation and assets director Brian Westley explained, the new path will be about one kilometre in length and will feature a mix of clearly designated shared and separated walking and cycling zones along the various sections of the project.<\/p>\n

“DTP will also install pedestrian-operated signals over McCrae Street near the intersection of Mundy Street,” he said.<\/p>\n

“The new lights will provide (a) dedicated, safe crossing point for pedestrians, bike riders and other vulnerable road users and provide access to the Bendigo Creek Trail and the Bendigo Low Line.<\/p>\n

“The project will be delivered in stages and while it is anticipated there will be some minor disruption to traffic flows in Mundy Street while the work is underway, access to businesses and properties will remain open at all times.<\/p>\n

“City staff will work with any affected businesses and property owners\/householders to ensure any disruptions are kept to a minimum.”<\/p>\n
