BENDIGO Braves have turned to two-time Olympian and former Braves star Tess Madgen as the new coach of the club’s NBL1 women’s team.<\/p>\n
Madgen, who has signed for two years, replaces Deanna Black (nee Smith).<\/p>\n
Black advised the Braves ahead of their final game in late July that she would not be seeking reappointment following two years at the helm.<\/p>\n
The move marks a welcome return to the club Madgen played for in 2019 and from 2021-2022.<\/p>\n
She also played for the city’s WNBL team \u2013 Bendigo Spirit \u2013 from 2010-2012 and was the club’s most valuable player in 2011-12.<\/p>\n
One of Australia’s most respected basketball figures, Madgen brings an impressive playing career and deep international and leadership experience to the role.<\/p>\n
An Olympian in Tokyo (2020) and Paris (2024), she captained the Australian Opals to a bronze medal in Paris, adding to an already distinguished international career that includes multiple FIBA medals and WNBL championships.<\/p>\n
Madgen is looking forward to the next chapter of her career in Bendigo.<\/p>\n
“I’m genuinely excited for the opportunity to lead the Bendigo Braves NBL1 Women’s team,” the 35-year-old said.<\/p>\n
“Having played for Bendigo and now stepping into the head-coaching role feels like a full-circle moment.<\/p>\n
“This role goes well beyond one team or one season.”<\/p>\n
Madgen said she was passionate about creating pathways for aspiring national league basketballers in Bendigo.<\/p>\n
“I want to ensure that girls and young women in Bendigo see a clear, achievable future in the game,” she said.<\/p>\n
“My vision is to see local development for players, from grassroots through to juniors, into NBL1 with the Bendigo Braves, and then on to the WNBL with the Bendigo Spirit.<\/p>\n
“The opportunities for females in Bendigo are astounding for a regional city.<\/p>\n
“That connection is the legacy I want to build.”<\/p>\n
Madgen takes charge of Braves team, which finished second last this season with a 4-18 record.<\/p>\n
