THIS week we chat with multi-disciplinary artist Laura Hardie, who earlier this year opened her own contemporary art space, Brassey Studio & Gallery, on the corner of High and Napier Streets in Eaglehawk.<\/p>\n

What motivated you to become an artist?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I’m lucky enough to come from an artistic family.<\/p>\n

So, from some of my first memories I\u2019ve been encouraged to create.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always considered how different mediums or techniques can cross between others and I was taught the importance of in an image, using quality materials and how art can benefit a community of people.<\/p>\n

From a young child, I never had any limitations on what artistic interest I could have.<\/p>\n

How would you describe your style?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I love leaving my \u2018maker’s hand\u2019 on every piece I create.<\/p>\n

I love the clunkyness and imperfections of a human making an artwork, and I (also) like to combine my obsession for pattern design and hyperrealism.<\/p>\n

Which other artists inspire you?<\/p>\n

At the moment I’m really inspired by Carly Le Cerf because she does these incredible encaustic wax oil paintings.<\/p>\n

I also love the process behind John Wolseley\u2019s work and his combining of different art-making techniques.<\/p>\n

I’m inspired and aspire to make Brassey into a commercial gallery like Paper Pear in Wagga Wagga.<\/p>\n

Have you had any mentors over your career?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Willi Carney has been wonderful and very supportive of my ideas in her shop.<\/p>\n

Straight out of uni I was really lucky to do foundry work with Phil Mune from Eclipse Bronze studio in Elphinstone.<\/p>\n

We (were) contracted to Billmans Foundry in Castlemaine and did all their ceramic shell lost wax casting along with working with other Australian artists on their sculptures.<\/p>\n

I grew up in Griffith NSW and mum managed to get me into classes with local artist Jennifer Forster, which at the time was incredibly hard to get into!<\/p>\n

Jenny hands down taught me techniques in fine art painting that I still use today.<\/p>\n

What are some highlights you have from your time as an artist?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I’m so fortunate to be surrounded by supportive people, both now and in the past.<\/p>\n

Selling jewellery for the first time and having a successful exhibition back in 2017, it felt like a full circle moment after watching my Nonno create and exhibit jewellery in the past.<\/p>\n

Getting ready for that exhibition with my best mate Karly and combining my love for jewellery making, photography and print making just felt like everything I\u2019d been working towards over the years was coming to fruition.<\/p>\n

Recently, standing back and looking at my own shopfront in a dream historic building centred in the heart of Eaglehawk, after 12 months of running a business is a pretty fond and surreal moment for me and my family and friends.<\/p>\n

What are you working on right now?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have a few fun commissions on the go (and) a lot of Christmas prep is underway.<\/p>\n

What would you say to young regional aspiring artists who are thinking of making a go of the creative life?<\/strong><\/p>\n

For me, time and experience were essential.<\/p>\n

When creating, say what YOU want through your art, not what you think people want to hear or see.<\/p>\n

No particular job is easy – even if the outlook looks great to others, it’s still incredibly hard work.<\/p>\n

Don’t wait around for timing or your environment to be perfect – if you feel like creating, then create!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
