“These types of horses, they’ll win their share. They aren’t going to get to the next level, but against their own class they’ll keep pottering around and win their four or five races.<\/p>\n
“He does surprise me because he keeps pulling up well, whereas a year ago we couldn’t back him up at all.<\/p>\n
“His strength is just coming through.”<\/p>\n
Curran, whose career highlight remains his fairytale win in the $250,000 VOBIS Gold Rush in 2015 with his $750 filly The Big Dance, is content to have just the one horse these days.<\/p>\n
“(Scorpion Bay) is all I’ve got and once he’s finished I’m finished,” he said.<\/p>\n
“I was thinking about it before the race, if this horse runs last, this could be the last runner I have.<\/p>\n
“Anyhow, it didn’t happen.<\/p>\n
“It’s a reason to get out of bed and the good thing is he goes to the paddock in winter and so do I.<\/p>\n
“We are only doing it for a bit of fun these days.”<\/p>\n
Run at Geelong, but what normally would have been a midweek city meeting at Moonee Valley, which is currently being redeveloped, the race carried an attractive $24,750 in prize money to the winner.<\/p>\n
“We’ll take that while we can,” Curran said.<\/p>\n
