BENDIGO’S beloved twin New Year’s Eve fireworks displays return to the top of the Rosalind Park Poppet Head on 31 December despite recent misgivings regarding the popular event.<\/p>\n
Queen Elizabeth Oval will offer the best views by a country mile for both the 9.15pm family display and the banging midnight follow-up for committed revelers.<\/p>\n
Note that the event will be cancelled if 31 December is a Total Fire Ban day and alcohol and pets are banned, with the QEO car park to be closed from 6am Wednesday 31 December until 6am the following day.<\/p>\n
The annual display remains a popular ongoing tradition despite pressure placed on the Greater Bendigo council last year to get rid of them for good.<\/p>\n
At the time two notices of motion had requested the City investigate alternative forms of entertainment that were “more inclusive for people and safer for animals and wildlife”.<\/p>\n
As a result, the City consulted with the community regarding its views and received an overwhelmingly positive response, with 76.2 per cent of respondents in favour of maintaining the event.<\/p>\n
Then-mayor Cr Andrea Metcalf said the result showed the community clearly values the current fireworks displays at various family-friendly occasions.<\/p>\n
“The word ‘joy’ was the most-used word when surveying residents and others who attend these events,” she said.<\/p>\n
“Council also recognised these free and low-cost forms of entertainment are particularly valuable at a time when our community is under increased financial pressure, and that attending such events represented valuable traditions for families.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
