A MULTIPLE world and national champion in BMX racing, Jaclyn Wilson has charged into the 60th Bendigo Sports Star of the Year race.<\/p>\n
Winner of the gold as Sports Star of the Year in 2011-12, Wilson keeps powering to glory a year after she was inducted into BMX Australia’s Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n
Last December she competed at the USA Grand Nationals for the first time.<\/p>\n
Wilson struck gold in the 41-50 years 20-inch category and the 45-50 cruiser class in Tulsa.<\/p>\n
The 48-year-old was back on the track for last weekend’s racing at Frankston and Lilydale, and this week’s meets at Casey and Park Orchards.<\/p>\n
Those hit-outs will play a key part in the build-up to the BMX national titles at Shepparton in April and another world championships campaign in July in Brisbane.<\/p>\n
Wilson has devoted thousands of hours to her BMX racing including workouts at the gym, sprints on the road and track, lengthy mountain bike rides, and gate sessions and laps on the BMX tracks in Bendigo, Shepparton and across Melbourne.<\/p>\n
The hairdresser is also mum to Aston and Carter.<\/p>\n
A rising star on the athletics front, Avery McDermid earned a Sports Star scholarship, which includes membership at D-Club, and cash.<\/p>\n
The Bendigo University Athletics Club member and Bendigo Senior Secondary College student struck gold at the Australian All Schools field and track titles in December.<\/p>\n
McDermid took out the under-18 3000m in a time of 8:41 at South Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium.<\/p>\n
He was on the track a week after a top-10 finish in the under-20 final at Australian Athletics world cross-country selection trials run in Canberra’s Stromlo Forest.<\/p>\n
A Victoria Country champion on the track, McDermid has opted not to contest this month’s country titles in Albury.<\/p>\n
The next hit-out for the teenager will be a Vic Milers meet on 20 January or 8 February at the 1500m or mile distance of 1609m.<\/p>\n
McDermid will also be in the running for the Cyril Michelsen Trust Fund at the 60th Sports Star of the Year presentation night, which is being dubbed ‘gold and glitter’ and will be held on 27 February at the All Seasons complex in Bendigo.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
