MELBOURNE United plays its second game in Bendigo in two weeks against Brisbane Bullets this Wednesday 21 January at Red Energy Arena.<\/p>\n

Playing their first NBL game in Bendigo in five years on 7 January, United came up one-point short of bottom-placed Cairns Taipans in a 92-93 defeat in front of a sell-out crowd.<\/p>\n

A game-winning free throw from former United forward Marcus Lee sealed the home side’s fate after they had controlled much of the game.<\/p>\n

A more efficient Taipans shot 62 per cent from the field and 11-of-21 from three-point range, compared to United’s 42 per cent shooting and 8-of-33 from beyond the arc.<\/p>\n

United led by as many as nine points during the third quarter, but trailed by one at the final change of end.<\/p>\n

Their struggles were compounded in the final term, with United connecting on only two of 11 attempts from three-point range.<\/p>\n

United slumped to seven losses from their past nine games, slipping under 50 per cent (win-loss).<\/p>\n

It’s a far cry for their earlier season form that saw United reel off nine straight wins.<\/p>\n

Despite the disappointment, a shining light for United in Bendigo Chris Goulding insisted the team was capable of turning things around before finals.<\/p>\n

“(We’re) pissed off, angry, but I’m sure we’ll watch it and see areas that we can be so much better or a little thing here or there could have changed the outcome,” said Goulding, who finished with 27 points on 5-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc.<\/p>\n

“But yeah, (we’re) pissed off and we’re not good enough to win games right now, that’s the bottom line as a collective and individually.<\/p>\n

“There’s key moments in that game where we had to come up with something positive and we didn’t, and they might be last on the ladder, but for so many years teams that are down on the bottom they’re not bad teams.<\/p>\n

“So on any given night, you’re going to get your arse kicked and we just simply weren’t good enough tonight, and in this league you find that out by getting beat.”<\/p>\n

Hometown favourite Dash Daniels finished with two points, three rebounds and an assist in 12.51 minutes of court time.<\/p>\n

United’s woes continued last Sunday, coming up short of Sydney Kings on the road.<\/p>\n

Down two starters to begin with, the Kings lost Matthew Dellavedova to a suspected concussion for the entire second half on their way to a courageous 97-94 victory.<\/p>\n

Before returning for their second NBL Ignite Cup game in Bendigo, United will venture to Perth for a clash against Tasmania JackJumpers tomorrow night at the RAC Arena as part of HoopsFest.<\/p>\n

United coach Dean Vickerman and his players are embracing the opportunity to play a pair of home games in Bendigo.<\/p>\n

“These Ignite Cup games in Bendigo have provided the opportunity for us to play games in front of home fans in Victoria across a period which would normally see the team play exclusively on the road,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We’re obviously excited about just having home games through January. I love what the club’s done and take a couple of games up to Bendigo.<\/p>\n

“Obviously there’s the Daniels factor with Dash going home, (It) just puts that extra little incentive to go and play really well up there.”<\/p>\n
