BENDIGO Braves has appointed one-time Brisbane Bullets development coach and renowned pathways mentor Josh Cheney as men’s coach for the 2026 NBL1 season.<\/p>\n
Cheney brings a strong high-performance coaching background to Bendigo, with his experience spanning the NBL, NBL1, Big V and state development pathways.<\/p>\n
He joins the Braves on a two-year deal.<\/p>\n
Red Energy Arena CEO David Elliott said Cheney’s appointment reflected the club’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its pathways, supporting local talent and building sustainable success at NBL1 level.<\/p>\n
Cheney has worked within professional environments at the Brisbane Bullets as an NBL development coach and has contributed to NBL1 South programs with the Kilsyth Cobras and Geelong Supercats.<\/p>\n
He has also led youth championship men’s programs, with a strong emphasis on player development, high standards and pathway alignment.<\/p>\n
Recognised for his detail-driven coaching approach, Cheney is known for his use of analytics and scouting, and for building high-performance training environments that support both individual growth and team success.<\/p>\n
Cheney, who is relocating from Melbourne to Bendigo, is committed to becoming an active member of the local community and will begin working with the playing group immediately.<\/p>\n
“Bendigo is a passionate basketball community with a rich history of success and a strong commitment to developing young players,” he said.<\/p>\n
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead the Braves men’s team and look forward to building strong relationships across the program, creating an environment where athletes are challenged, supported, and able to progress in their basketball journey.”<\/p>\n
Cheney’s signing aligns with the club’s vision of fostering strong connections between junior pathways, local athletes and the NBL1 program.<\/p>\n
Elliott said with former Olympian and Opals captain Tess Madgen leading the women’s program, and Cheney appointed to head the men’s program, the Braves would enter the next two seasons with an aligned focus and confidence, setting the stage for an exciting future across both teams.<\/p>\n
“Josh brings a high level of professionalism, basketball IQ and pathway experience to our men’s program,” Elliott said.<\/p>\n
