{"id":111103,"date":"2026-02-02T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-01T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=111103"},"modified":"2026-01-28T22:58:53","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T11:58:53","slug":"maturing-pacer-leaves-cup-rivals-in-a-twist-at-bendigo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/sport\/maturing-pacer-leaves-cup-rivals-in-a-twist-at-bendigo\/","title":{"rendered":"Maturing pacer leaves Cup rivals in a twist at Bendigo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HARKNESS trainer Joe Pace has always known the ability is there with Twisting By, but it&#8217;s taken time and a trip up north to bring out its full potential.<\/p>\n<p>The son of Rock N Roll Heaven claimed his first country cup victory with a resilient performance in the Elmore Pacing Cup (2150m) at Lord&#8217;s Raceway in Bendigo last week.<\/p>\n<p>Sent out as the $1.60 favourite off the back of a string of strong metro-class efforts over the last three months, Twisting By came from the rear of the field with a lap to travel to circle the field three-wide and challenge the leaders Hoorah Philtra and Clymenus on the home turn.<\/p>\n<p>Brilliantly driven by Pace&#8217;s son Adrian, Twisting By, once in front, was able to hold out the fast-finishing Do It \u2013 trained in Bendigo by Tayla Fellows \u2013 for a gutsy 1.2-metre win, with Hugo Rocks three metres away in third.<\/p>\n<p>It gave the six-year-old his first country cup success at his first attempt, much to the delight of his trainer who credited a trip to Queensland during last year&#8217;s Inter Dominion Series for a more versatile and consistent Twisting By.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a bit of a drop back in class for him; he has been racing in metro-class races his last seven or eight starts and has been handling it really well,&#8221; Pace said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;His sectionals and his times have been superb. I couldn&#8217;t ask more of him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I thought the race at Bendigo would suit him well, especially the distance and with the speed being on with some quick beginners, and that&#8217;s how it panned out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A nine-time winner and placed on a further 15 occasions in 43 starts, Twisting By has been a model of consistency in recent times, placing outside the top four just once in his last 11 starts, dating back to June last year.<\/p>\n<p>Pace, a dual Group 1 winner with his star squaregaiter Harry Stamper, said the penny for Twisting By had dropped during his stint in Queensland.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Early on, when he came across from New Zealand, he preferred the 2100m and over, but we went to Albion Park with him as a companion for Harry Stamper for the Inter Dominion and he had a couple of race starts over a mile. Those couple of race starts sharpened him up and made him adaptable to mile racing,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now he&#8217;s quite versatile and can run any distance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That was his first crack at a country cup \u2013 I&#8217;m sure we&#8217;ll look at some more.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ll wait until next year when the Leap To Fame&#8217;s and Kingman&#8217;s are gone before looking at cups like Cranbourne and Bendigo, but something like the Wedderburn Cup might have been ideal for him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I chose to come to Bendigo because it&#8217;s a spacious track and he needs that room as he is a horse that comes from behind. Charlton would be an ideal track for him, and the Horsham Cup, which, he had a few issues when that came around.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But the good thing is there is still plenty of time for country cups, if not this year, next year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2026\/02\/8ac2b1f7-81c4-45ae-b_31141.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"368\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bennie And The Jets, driven by Leigh Sutton, narrowly gets the better of Charleston Avenue (Taylor Youl) to prevail in the Community Bank Elmore, Lockington and Rochester Elmore Trotters Cup last week.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Short of the biggest win of his career, Twisting By&#8217;s peak effort to date was his win in the Vicbred Super Series Silver Pace for four-year entires and geldings at Bendigo in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Two of his nine career wins have been at Melton, including on debut in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Pace said Twisting By would next be aimed at a heat of the Vin Knight Memorial Pace on Cranbourne Cup night this Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the night, the short-priced favourite also took the honours in the Elmore Trotters Cup, with the Adam Rudd-trained Bennie And The Jets ($2) adding to his recent cups haul with a fighting half-head win over Charleston Avenue ($3.20), with Thunda Struck ($9.50) in third.<\/p>\n<p>The seven-year-old gelding \u2013 third behind Jilliby Ballerini in this month&#8217;s Group 3 Bendigo Trotters Cup at Melton \u2013 appreciated the drop back in class, making it two cup wins in three starts following his victory at Cobram in late December.<\/p>\n<p>The son of Quaker Jet and Ugly Betty has now won three of his past four starts and has placed in the top three in eight of his past nine runs.<\/p>\n<p>Leigh Sutton was again the winning driver, after partnering him to victory at Cobram.<\/p>\n<p>While having to narrowly settle for the second place in the Cup with Charleston Avenue, after attempting to lead all the way and only being run down in the shadows of the post, the combination of Romsey trainer Chris Savanosio and Bendigo born-and-bred driver Taylor Youl savoured success earlier in the night with My Ultimate Luigi in the maiden pace.<\/p>\n<p>Bendigo reinswoman Ellen Tormey took the driving honours on the night with a treble, including teaming up with her father John, from Charlton, for a win in the final race on the program with the trotting mare Dona Amalia.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HARKNESS trainer Joe Pace has always known the ability is there with Twisting By, but it&#8217;s taken time and a trip up north to bring out its full potential.
